BPH stands for benign prostatic hyperplasia. This means your prostate gland has become enlarged, but isn’t cancerous. As the prostate grows bigger, it can put pressure on the tube that carries urine from your bladder (the urethra). This can cause a range of bothersome urinary symptoms that disrupt daily life.
The Rezūm System is an exciting new option approved by the FDA in 2015 to treat BPH. It uses steam to treat the enlarged prostate tissue. The steam helps shrink the extra prostate tissue pressing on the urethra, opening up the urinary channel again.
During the procedure, your urologist will inject small amounts of steam right into the targeted areas of the prostate. The steam breaks apart lesions and destroys cells, effectively shrinking the prostate. The entire process takes around 5 minutes or less and is done right in your urologist’s office. There’s no hospital stay required.
Right after the procedure, a catheter will be placed to help you urinate while swelling subsides over the next 1-3 days. Mild discomfort may occur, but serious side effects are rare. In about two weeks, you’ll really start to notice an improvement in urinary flow and symptoms. Maximum results take 3-6 months as your prostate continues to shrink.
This minimally invasive treatment may be a great choice if medications haven’t worked or you want to avoid major surgery. Talk to your urologist to see if Rezūm is appropriate based on the size and shape of your enlarged prostate. The short procedure time and quick recovery are added bonuses!
